Learn more about Septic Tank Pumping
An aerobic treatment unit uses air and bacteria to treat wastewater to a higher standard than a conventional tank. Colorado counties commonly require one on small lots, tight soils, and sensitive sites, and they require maintenance to match.
Aerobic treatment unit An aerobic treatment unit, or ATU, is a septic system that adds air to the wastewater so oxygen-using bacteria break down waste more thoroughly than a standard tank. It uses a blower or aerator and needs regular servicing.
ATUs are permitted on tight lots and difficult soils, and they only meet that permit if the mechanical parts are maintained.
The situation
An aerobic treatment unit pushes air into a treatment chamber so aerobic bacteria break down waste faster and more completely than they can in an anaerobic septic tank. The effluent it produces is clean enough that counties will permit a smaller or shallower dispersal area on difficult sites.
The trade off is maintenance. An ATU has an air compressor, diffusers, and often a pump and controls. If the aerator stops, treatment quality drops within days and the dispersal area starts taking loading it was never designed for. Most Colorado counties require a maintenance contract and periodic reporting for exactly this reason.
How the job runs
The compressor is the heart of the system. We verify it is running, moving air, and not drawing hot.
We look at sludge levels in each compartment and whether the unit is producing clear effluent.
Panels, timers, and alarms are checked so a failure gets announced instead of hidden.
ATUs still need pumping. We record what we did so you have proof for the county.
