Septic Tank Baffle Repair and Replacement

Inlet and outlet baffles keep solids in the tank and out of your drain field. A missing outlet baffle is one of the fastest ways to destroy a field, and it is cheap to fix.

  • Inlet and outlet baffle inspection with every pump-out
  • Concrete, plastic, and tee replacements
  • Effluent filter added where the system allows

Septic baffle A septic baffle is the wall or tee at the tank inlet and outlet that slows incoming flow and holds back the floating scum layer. Baffles can be cast into the tank or fitted as sanitary tees.

A missing or broken outlet baffle lets scum and solids leave the tank and enter the drain field directly.

The situation

What baffles do

The inlet baffle slows incoming wastewater so it does not stir up the settled sludge. The outlet baffle or tee pulls liquid from the clear middle layer of the tank, leaving scum on top and sludge on the bottom where they belong.

Concrete baffles corrode from the gases inside the tank and eventually crumble. Once the outlet baffle is gone, scum and solids flow straight into the drain field lines. The homeowner sees nothing for a while, then the field starts failing years early.

How the job runs

How we repair baffles

  1. Pump and expose

Baffles can only be properly inspected with the tank empty, so this work pairs with a pump-out.

  2. Inspect both ends

We check the inlet and outlet for corrosion, cracks, and missing sections, and we look for solids in the outlet line.

  3. Install a replacement tee

Modern sanitary tees are set and sealed to restore the correct liquid draw.

  4. Add a filter where it fits

An effluent filter on the outlet adds another layer of protection for the field.
