Frozen septic line A frozen septic line is an ice blockage in the pipe between the house and the tank, or between the tank and the field, that stops wastewater from flowing. It happens in shallow, poorly insulated, or low-use lines during a hard freeze.
A frozen line stops the whole system while the house keeps producing wastewater, and thawing it the wrong way can crack the pipe.
A frozen septic line usually shows up during a cold snap as drains that stop working with no clog history and no odor. Common causes are low water use in a vacant home, a shallow or poorly sloped pipe, lost snow cover over the line, and a slow drip that freezes layer by layer. Do not pour boiling water or chemicals into the line. Thawing needs to be done at the pipe with the right equipment so it is not cracked.
